An Old Fashioned Holiday

Remember when you were a child, and Christmas seemed to take forever to come around? Remember the anticipation? The days on end spent looking at the “Wish-book? Planning and writing out your Christmas list? Laying awake at night so excited for the Christmas parade? The exceptional smell that beckoned you in from the cold when Mom and Grandma were baking goodies? Remember Caroling, Sledding, Eggnog, Christmas Cards, Decorating, and my all time favorite driving around with your family to look at the Christmas lights? Then there was a church service, the happy Carol’s we sung, the promise of a better life. Everyone was happy; everyone was full of good cheer and love. The light of Christmas shone ever so brightly.

What happened to those days? What happened to the joy we felt as children? How did we turn the holidays into something that some people dread? As a speaker and trainer I sadly hear so many people talking about the dreaded holidays. All the work to do, all the money to spend. Their too busy, church is too crowded, there is too much traffic, and everything is simply too much bother!

I offer a thought that it does not have to be that way. If the holiday season is a stressful time for you and yours, it is time to reconsider why? What choices have we made in our lives that have caused us to turn into Grinches? Who wrote the rules that say we need to do everything and go broke doing it?

Please consider taking some time to rethink your idea of Christmas. What does it truly mean to you? What do you and your family still enjoy about the holiday? What brings you tidings of comfort and joy? Those are the things that you should be doing. Just because you or your family always did things a certain way does not mean that you cannot change them. Life evolves if you let it, do you enjoy decorating every room in the house? Do you enjoy baking? Make a list of the parts of the holidays that bring you joy. Those are the things to keep in your celebration. The things that make you crazy or that you dread are the thing to let go.

I urge you to spend your Christmas in the most simple fashion you can. Spend it in a way that brings you only joy. Have a potluck dinner, purchase gifts only for the children, make the adult gifts those of your time. Enjoy having dinner with your friends and catch up, visit an elderly neighbor. Slow down, take a breath, feel the joy and love that can start with you and expand throughout your entire family. Be at peace, hug the kids, take quiet time with your partner or spouse, let them know just how much they mean to you. Count your blessings. Best of all have a joyful holiday full of family and friends.

Until next time, I wish you the true riches of life, love, peace, happiness, and the time to enjoy it all.

WE CAN LEARN A LOT FROM A 2-YEAR OLD

The day was hectic and hurried as days can sometimes be around the

holidays. Mom and 2-1/2-year-old daughter had been running errands

all day, Mom was frazzled, daughter was antsy. The last stop for

the afternoon was to a restaurant to meet Grandma and have a late lunch.

As Mom hurried up the steps to the establishment, just about dragging

the child, she stopped, just before snapping at her to hurry up, she looked

back. This precious child had stopped cold and was looking in wonder

at the beautiful Christmas tree that was displayed in the entry.

As the words “Isn’t is pretty Mommy” came out of her mouth. Her mother

had a HUGE revelation. Mommy did not even notice the tree before her

daughter mentioned it. Mommy was like so many grown-ups, she was so busy

doing, and rushing here and there that it never occurred to her to notice

the tree. She completely forgot to stop and enjoy all of the decorations

and lights around her.

We can indeed learn a lot from children. Do yourself a favor, make the time

this holiday, to enjoy, really enjoy, the sights, sounds, and smells of

the holiday season. When is the last time you noticed a beautiful tree?

The holidays are not about who gets the most. The holidays are about

noticing the little things in life, filling your heart with love.

And most of all remembering to say, “isn’t it pretty” with all amazement

and joy of a two-year-old.

Inspirational Quotes

“The positive effect of kindness on the immune system and on the

increased production of serotonin in the brain has been proven in

research studies. Serotonin is a naturally occurring substance in

the body that makes us feel more comfortable, peaceful, and even

blissful. In fact, the role of most anti-depressants is to stimulate

the production of serotonin chemically, helping to ease depression.

Research has shown that a simple act of kindness directed toward

another improves the functioning of the immune system and stimulates

the production of serotonin in both the recipient of the kindness and

the person extending the kindness. Even more amazing is that persons

observing the act of kindness have similar beneficial results.

Imagine this! Kindness extended, received, or observed beneficially

impacts the physical health and feelings of everyone involved!”
